Reason behind is, for producing light, those standard incandescent bulbs require metallic filaments whereas the compact fluorescent lamps uses a limited amount of mercury and special gases to generate light. When current is passed through these energy bulbs, the excited mercury makes the gases produce ultraviolet light, which later with the help of fluorescent coating of the bulb's glass is converted to a glowing illumination. This illumination effectively and efficiently lights up the room.

The compact fluorescent bulbs are designed to last up to 10 times longer than standard light bulbs. Therefore its longevity also makes it more practical to be used in homes and offices.
